"To collaborate with, and learn from, other integration practice leaders is the strongest value that I have received from the IC."

John Schmidt, Integration Consortium Chairman & SVP Architecture, Wells Fargo Bank

You may have noticed when reviewing the value proposition of the Associate membership category (http://icmembership.icmembers.org/Associate) that there is a strong collaboration theme that runs through most of the benefits.  As highlighted by the recent book Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything, the use of mass collaboration in a business environment can be seen as an extension of the trend in outsourcing: externalize formerly internal business functions. The difference however is that instead of an organized business entity providing services, mass collaboration relies on free individual agents to come together and cooperate to solve problems.  In this new world, everything changes:

  • Participation: The line between media and reader is gone. Readers are publishers.
  • Openness: Votes, comments, content are freely accepted.
  • Trust: The most respected information sources are often transparent, public feedback from peers (like eBay ratings).
  • Conversation: Focused on a real-time dialog between passionate people.
  • Community: Formation of niche communities of the like-minded.
  • Connectedness: Trackbacks, comments, cross-linking, tagging ensure a virtual web of social media sites by topic.

To this end, the IC is energetically facilitating a series of private knowledge exchange conferences for Associate (end-user) members.  These are audio or webinar-based conferences that do not require travel – simply block off a few hours on your calendar as the events are scheduled.  This Wiki page will be updated regularly with information about upcoming meetings, so please check back on a periodic basis for updates.

2008 PKE Collaboration Topics

In preparation for the PKE launch in Q1, 2008, the purpose of this section is to collect suggestions from prospective PKE members for discussion or collaboration topics. Since this is a Wiki, you too can edit it. Just click on edit this page and add your comments to the topics below, or add brand new topics that are of interest to you. These will be discussed at the November 13th PKE conference call and will be continue to be refined through the end of the year.

ICC’s (Integration Competency Centers) appear to be a hot topic among a number of members. Sub-topics include:
  • What is the proper organizational/delivery model for Enterprise Integration?  Federated, Matrixed, Centralized, or some combination.
  • What is in the Scope of the Enterprise Integration Team?  The no brainers are: building interfaces, enhancing the ESB, etc.   What about Master Data Management or BPM - where do they fit? It is easy to talk about this at 40,000 feet but when it comes to delivery and defining roles and responsibilities there are a lot of questions.

ESB’s and appliances – experiences and lessons learned.  Related questions are:
  • Is “buying” an integrated ESB a good idea – or should you assemble one from different vendor products and/or build your own?
  • Is an ESB solution for a large enterprise simply a scaled up version of what you would need in a medium-size enterprise – or is it fundamentally different?

Virtualization – leading edge or bleeding edge. Who is implementing this technology – and is it ready for core mission-critical applications.

Security continues to be a hot topic. A number of related questions are:
  • Who has really tackled the SOA security challenges in a practical way? Is WS-Security part of the solution?
  • What are effective techniques for securing information in a SaaS environment (like Salesforce.com)?
  • How can you implement effective information security for remote call-center agents (i.e. agents working out of their homes)? How do you control what information they can see, print, or copy to a USB device? How do you know someone isn’t looking over their shoulder?

Other topics??....
